Zanzibar Lessons

The photographs from Zanzibar, my first photography workshop in an exotic location, say more about me than about what is actually captured in the images.

In just over a week, I played checkers at sunrise with a few men in the harbour, drank Zanzibar spice coffee with four fishermen, and handed my camera to a child in a tiny village so he could take a photograph of me—sitting among his little friends as they made fun of me.

My Zanzibar lesson: what matters is to be (more) present. And if that leads to a photograph, so much the better.

Early morning. A man heads toward the fish market. Fishermen wake up in their boat. A moment later, they wave to me and ask me to join them for coffee.
