Zanzibar Lessons

The photographs from Zanzibar, my first photography workshop in an exotic location, say more about me than about what is actually captured in the images.

In just over a week, I played checkers at sunrise with a few men in the harbour, drank Zanzibar spice coffee with four fishermen, and handed my camera to a child in a tiny village so he could take a photograph of me—sitting among his little friends as they made fun of me.

My Zanzibar lesson: what matters is to be (more) present. And if that leads to a photograph, so much the better.

Six in the morning. The oldest of this group takes the picture. At six or seven years old, I found him mature enough to hold my camera.

I was blown away when I noticed he applied Dutch angle, just as I do too often.
